Flooring with dogs and cats

Pets punish floors in three specific ways. Once you know which one you are dealing with, the choice gets simple.
We install luxury vinyl plank and carpet across Northeast Ohio, including Independence.
Scratches: look at the wear layer
Nail scratches live in the clear wear layer on top of a vinyl plank. A heavier wear layer, twenty mil or more, is the single most useful spec for a house with a big dog. Texture and pattern variation also hide the marks that do appear.
Accidents: look at the seams
Liquids do not damage a waterproof-surface plank, but they can travel through seams to the subfloor if they sit long enough. Clean promptly and the floor is fine.
For carpet in a pet household, ask about solution dyed fiber and a moisture barrier pad. Neither makes carpet immune, both buy you time.
Traction
Very smooth, glossy floors are hard on older dogs. A matte finish with real surface texture gives a dog more grip, and runners on stairs help a lot with an aging animal.
Hair and cleaning
Dark, high-gloss floors show every hair. Mid-tone matte planks are far more forgiving day to day, which matters more than most people expect.
