Basement flooring in an Ohio home
Updated September 2026
A basement floor fails for one reason far more often than any other: moisture that was there before the floor went down.
We install luxury vinyl plank and carpet across Northeast Ohio, including Broadview Heights.
The slab is the project
Concrete moves moisture. Even a dry-looking Ohio basement slab can pass vapor up from the soil underneath, and that vapor has to go somewhere once you cover the slab.
Before anything else, look for efflorescence, the white powdery residue on the concrete, dark patches after heavy rain, and musty smell in a closed basement. Those are the signs worth chasing down first.
What goes down there
Waterproof-surface vinyl plank is the standard answer for below-grade rooms. It tolerates the temperature swing, it does not swell from a topical spill, and it can be lifted if something happens later.
Carpet below grade is possible in a finished, dry, conditioned basement, but it is the first thing to suffer if water ever arrives.
Flatness and drains
Basement slabs are rarely flat, and they often slope deliberately toward a drain. Floating floors need a reasonably flat plane, so leveling compound is a normal part of a basement quote rather than a surprise.
Be clear about what is covered
Manufacturer warranties generally exclude damage from flooding, leaks, standing water, and moisture originating below the floor. A waterproof-surface plank is not flood insurance. Fix the water first, then floor the room.
How we handle a basement quote
We look at the slab, ask about past water, and write the prep into the scope so the number you get accounts for the floor actually in your house.
