Room by room
Flooring in an older Northeast Ohio home
Updated September 2026
Older houses around Kent, Akron, and the inner-ring Cleveland suburbs are solidly built and rarely flat. Both facts affect the floor.
We install luxury vinyl plank and carpet across Northeast Ohio, including Avon.
Plank subfloors
Many older homes have diagonal plank subfloors rather than sheet goods. Individual boards can cup or gap, and a floating floor telegraphs that unevenness over time. An added underlayment layer is often the right call.
Settlement is normal
A century of settling means a floor that slopes toward a wall or dips in the middle of a room. Some of that gets corrected with leveling compound. Some of it is structural and is not fixed by a floor covering, and we will say so plainly rather than pretend otherwise.
Height and old trim
Older houses often have beautiful original baseboard you do not want to remove. Quarter round lets us finish against it cleanly. Watch for radiator feet, floor registers, and doors that already clear by very little.
Layers underneath
It is common to find several generations of flooring stacked up. What comes up, and what stays, changes the tear-out and the haul-away, so we look before we quote.
