SPC or WPC: which rigid core is right for your house
Updated September 2026
Rigid core planks come in two families. They look identical in a showroom and behave differently in a house.
We install luxury vinyl plank and carpet across Northeast Ohio, including Seven Hills.
SPC is dense
A stone plastic composite core is harder and heavier. It resists denting from furniture legs and heavy appliances, and it is more stable when a room swings between hot and cold, which matters in a sunroom or a three-season space.
The trade is feel. SPC is firmer underfoot and carries a little more sound.
WPC is softer
A wood plastic composite core is thicker and has more give. It feels warmer and quieter to walk on, and it is more forgiving over a subfloor that is not perfectly flat.
The trade is denting. A heavy point load can leave a mark that SPC would have shrugged off.
Choosing between them
Kitchens, entries, and anywhere with heavy furniture or appliances favor SPC. Bedrooms, upper floors, and rooms where comfort matters more than punishment favor WPC.
Whichever you pick, subfloor prep still governs the result. Neither core hides a bad floor beneath it forever.
