Carpet pad: the part you never see and always feel
Updated September 2026
Pad is the cheapest way to make a carpet feel expensive and the fastest way to ruin one. It is not the place to save.
We install luxury vinyl plank and carpet across Northeast Ohio, including Canton.
Density does the work
Pad is rated by density, not just thickness. A dense pad supports the carpet backing so the fibers stand up under traffic. A soft, thick pad feels luxurious in the store and lets the carpet flex itself apart over the years.
Thicker is not better
Too much thickness under a low-pile carpet makes the floor feel unstable and can void a manufacturer warranty, because most carpet warranties specify a pad range. We check that specification against the carpet you pick.
Stairs are their own case
Stairs need a firmer pad than the rooms they connect. A soft pad on a tread rolls under your foot at the nose of the step, which both feels wrong and wears the carpet fast at exactly the point everyone sees.
Moisture barriers
A moisture barrier pad is worth discussing for households with pets or small children. It slows liquids reaching the subfloor. It is not a substitute for cleaning a spill and it does not make a room waterproof.
How we quote it
Pad is included in the written estimate when it is part of the scope, listed as a line item rather than added afterward, so you can see exactly what is going under your carpet.
